lapinfrost | ✸ 1st Day: Staring Contests = Serious Business

[ When the feed suddenly opens, a dark-haired kid with bright blue eyes can be seen staring intently at the screen for a few seconds. Then it suddenly becomes saturated with bright pink and a smiley face, the stuff of anyone's pink-induced nightmares. One adjustment of the camera later, it becomes clearer that the bright pink thing is in fact a bright pink blob otherwise known as a Ditto. But once again, the kid shows up right above the blob. ]

I have an important question. Actually, I mean "questions". But for now...

[ He starts poking the top of the jelly blob, watching it jiggle slightly in response before returning his attention to the feed. ]

Can this dem-- Pokémon blink? Just wanna know if staring contests would be fair or not.

[ At that, the Ditto's smile turns upside down. The kid spares a glance downwards and pokes it again. Leaving it to pout, he looks back at the screen, poker face still in place. ]

But if you can't answer, that's fine. I'd settle for someone helping me figure out where I am instead, because I'm totally lost.

[ And in a ridiculously sudden manner, his poker face switches to a rather friendly smile. ]

[ He then starts waving at the camera, his Pokémon half-heartedly joining in a few seconds later before it starts moving and the screen fades to...pink. A muffled voice can be heard in the background after a moment. ]

...Ah, I don't think that's how we turn this off.

...Demons? You got them in your world?

[With all the different kind of people coming in, demons might be common and normal somewhere.]

Recently, yeah. Though I guess should say they've always been around.

Kind of like my world. Though I didn't know they're around until 'recently' back home.

[ It's rather sad to think that may be common... ]

Maybe the demons are trying to get our guards down with cute monsters and innocuous background music. Then they'll make their preemptive strike of doom.

...Or something like that?

So using the beloved, childhood monsters as their disguise, they slowly gain our trust and then...bam.

[He looks so serious, until he glance at to the side and talk to someone for a bit. 'No, I don't mean you, okay?'.]

Sudden bad end. We'll have to restart the game.

[ He looks down for a moment and starts poking his slightly pouty-looking Ditto. Didn't mean anything bad by it, little blob thing! ]

Or restart back at our last checkpoint.

[He pats his Clefairy, before turning his attention back to the 'Gear.]

Which are normally Pokemon Centers around here.

We can't save anywhere? Too bad. Though I guess that would make things too easy.

It's more like auto-saving after we get to a Pokemon Center. But yeah, it would be too easy and exploitable otherwise.

Duly noted. Is there any other game mechanic I should be aware of?

Let's see...there's challenging the gym leaders and getting the badge. Even if you don't want to complete the challenge, having the badges make getting around easier.

Really? Why would it make it easier?

The badges are like qualifications. You need certain badges in order to use useful moves outside of battle, like Fly or Surf.

So it's like a bunch of driver's licenses.

Pretty much. So in the long run, it's better to grab the badges to go around quickly.

Makes sense. I'll do that as soon as possible.

[ Pause. ]

I'm not sure if Ditto here can handle that though.

[ Ditto seems offended by that remark and starts...wriggling around while talking. Or something. It appears to be trying to defend itself, but alas, Hiro has no idea what it's trying to say except its name. ]

Yeah...just one Ditto won't cut it. Possible, but very hard.

So you gotta get new Pokemon to build up your team.

I see. Something tells me I'm going to miss Demon Auctions very soon.

You know about the Demon Auctions?

[ Huh. Didn't expect that question. ]

Yeah. So there's auctions going on where you come from?

Uh huh. We have them as well, so demon tamers can bid for demons.

[He never thought the concept exist in other worlds as well.]

Same here. I only became a tamer recently though, so I'm not that familiar with it.

[ Honestly, Hiro was just trying to get him to tsukkomi him over the concept of Devil Auctions... ]

Well, it's an auction to bid on demons. We bid on them against other tamers within a time limit. Whoever bid the most wins and get the demon's contract.

[Unless the demon turns out to be something else entirely.]

My friend usually did most of the bidding whenever we have time.

[ Nodding. Well, he knew that much at least. ]

I just bid while walking around. But I usually don't bid with someone or have someone else do it since we're not together all the time.

[ They always end up doing their own thing outside of invader stuff after all. ]

We normally stick together, unless we have to split up.

[Usually to find food and water.]

I'm usually busy with something to bid.
